Exploring Japuji

The Sikh scholars often lay emphasis on the correct pronunciation of GurbaniThat is a great purpose to achieve. Without correct pronunciation, we cannot communicate the Gurus' ideas and his message in their original sense. But what is more important is the correct interpretation of the Gurus' word. If the Gurus' word or the Baani is not interpreted correctly, its whole meaning and significance will be lost. If this happens, the entire efforts of those who read, listen, and preach it will go waste. Above all, the Bani will not be projected in the same perspective in which it was composed by the Gurus.

Most times people are swayed by the traditional utterances of the preachers who never pay attention to what they impugn to the masters on account of their own limitations. As a result of it, the listeners carry a wrong message about the utterances of the Gurus. Therefore, all Sikhs have to cross-check minutely if everything is said and delivered correctly according to the ideology and intentions of the authors of the sacred text.

The Japuji is the first Baani of the Sikh scripture composed by Guru Nanak and edited under his supervision at his mature age. It contains his philosophical moorings about the truth of the universe and the methodology of discovering it. It may have close significance for the way the Sikh philosophy is understood.  It is, therefore, imperative to explore and interpret this text so that understanding the rest of his Baani and the entire scripture becomes easy and objective. It is in this sense that exploring Japuji is necessary,  as well as important. (To read more visit HOME),
